What's Happening Now: Here are a few ideas for activities that are happening in and around the Mid-Atlantic area. Click on any activity for more information.
Washington, DC Things to Do: One of the most popular places for family travel is Washington, DC. Living in the suburbs of DC all my life, I have to admit that there are still some attractions and museums that I have on my to-do list. It reminds me that DC is one of those tourist destinations with so many options that you can’t possibly “do it all” in one trip. To me, the fact that the Smithsonian museums and the historical memorials surrounding the National Mall are free makes the choices of where to go and what to see even more difficult. Learn More
State By State: Visit our state-by-state travel ideas pages. Use these ideas for inspiration to plan a trip and to give you an overview of the type of attractions each state has to offer. Although we haven't been to all these places yet, they are certainly on our list. You can get started by clicking on Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina, and check back periodically, as more states are added.
Road Trip Here We Come: Taking a family road trip is the ultimate bonding experience. Here you can find travel itineraries for the Pacific Northwest, Four Corners Southwest, California and the Boston/Maine area. You can also follow our boards on Pinterest. Places To Stay: During a family road trip, it is always nice to end the day being able to relax a bit. No matter what famous sights we saw, I could always count on my kids to get really excited about one thing – the hotel! Finding hotels that have a little extra room can be a challenge, especially with teenagers or larger families. Here are some places scattered around the country that we have personally visited that offer a few extra amenities, in addition to being a clean place to lay your head for the night. Not all are modern, but they definitely each had something special to offer. View the the list of our favorites around the U.S. Enjoy!
National Parks: There are over 412 areas designated within the National Park System. Check out their website for details on all the different areas including national parks, lakeshores, monuments, battlefields and much more found in the U.S. Some of our favorites are Bryce Canyon, Utah, Acadia National Park in Maine, and Kings Canyon in California. Be sure to get your National Park passport stamped along the way. For more thoughts and ideas related to our wonderful National Park System, go to our National Parks page.
Eating on the Road: One of the best parts of traveling around the country has to be trying all the different foods. Whether its crab cakes in Maryland, lobster in Maine or Mexican food in the southwest, it can be overwhelming to know where to start looking for great restaurants. It’s always nice to get recommendations from friends or local hotels, but they tend to be the “on the beaten path” places that everyone goes to (not that there is anything wrong with these restaurants, but sometimes it is fun to venture out into the local culture).
